About Us

The Ecumenical Pharmaceutical Network (EPN) is a Christian, not for profit, independent organisation committed to the provision of quality pharmaceutical services as a means to achieving global goals and targets on health and access to medicines. EPN has been strengthening pharmaceutical services in church health systems for over 40 years.

"The purpose of this learning platform is not to create a new cadre of health professionals but to support those already working in healthcare facilities with the basic knowledge and skills needed to deliver on quality services. In a world that moves at high speed and requires fast reactions, the learning options should adjust to reflect exactly this. The best you can do is to continually keep learning and take time to apply what you have learnt. I wish all the healthcare professionals the best as they gain and share knowledge and impact positively."
Richard Neci Cizungu
Executive Director, EPN

Our Essentials of Pharmaceutical Practice Courses

Medicines are a major component of any health system and they often take up a significant portion of the health system budget. Therefore, the management of medicines in any health system should be the responsibility of professionals trained especially for this. Lack of Pharmaceutical Know how is a constant problem in many health settings in Sub-Saharan Africa. Especially small health facilities in rural areas are often left without any pharmaceutically trained personnel. Stock keeping and dispensing are done by an appointed nurse or other health facility employee. Stock outs, badly stored medicines as well as dispensing and counselling errors are often the case.

EPN has addressed this challenge by developing a comprehensive training for these staffs, which enables them to run a dispensary according to good pharmaceutical practices. The ‘Essentials of Pharmaceutical Practice’ training has been successfully carried out in many countries since 2011. The main objective of the course is to improve access to Pharmaceutical trainings for health workers without formal training in Pharmacy. The EPP courses are designed and conducted in a modular approach for better understanding and impact.
